The risks of AI advertising for B2B, and how to manage them

The main risks are practical: your category may not be accepted, spend can go to the wrong companies, measurement is young, and tracking needs consent in the UK. Each one has a simple control you can put in place before launch.

Risks and controls

Risk What it looks like Control
Eligibility Your category is restricted or declined Check the policy and run a small review test first
Wasted spend Clicks from companies that will never buy Narrow context hints; judge on in-profile companies
Weak measurement Clicks with no link to pipeline Lead event, CRM matching, company identification
Claims Ads rejected or misleading Only claims you can show on the landing page
Privacy Tracking without consent in the UK Load pixels after consent; describe it in your privacy notice
Partial reach Decision-makers on paid plans see no ads Pair ads with organic AI visibility
Platform change Rules shift month to month Monthly review of targeting and policy

Brand safety

OpenAI says ads don't influence answers and appear in a separate, labelled block. Its placement rules also exclude some sensitive conversations. For B2B, the bigger brand risk is your own copy: overstated claims get noticed by buyers before they get noticed by reviewers.

The risk of waiting

Not testing also has a cost. Half of software buyers already start in AI chatbots; learning the channel later means learning it when competitors already know which questions work.

Questions

What's the biggest risk in practice?

Running a test that can't tell you anything: no tracking, no identification, no thresholds.

Could our ad appear next to something embarrassing?

Ads appear in a separate, labelled block, and OpenAI's placement rules exclude some sensitive conversations. Your own copy is the bigger brand risk.

What if our competitor bids on our name?

It's possible in topic-based targeting. Keep your organic answers accurate and your comparison page fair; that's where buyers check.
